One thing about North Idaho winters with horses is that unless you have a covered arena or have easy access to one, the horses pretty much get the whole winter off. Being lazy, eating, getting fat and just being a horse is what my herd of three do all winter.
Then comes spring and everybody is out of shape and fresh. Fresh meaning, every little thing is an issue and needs “special” time. I am not sure if it’s just them messin’ with me or if they just forgot what they are supposed to do. Sometimes it can be, well no, it is downright frustrating and kinda scary.
I had spent some time working Joe from the ground and since today was a beautiful day I decide it was time for a ride. He and I headed out into the neighborhood. He did quite well for the first 2 miles then I decided to head home. The video below is of us just turning around and heading home. Not but 3 minutes after I put my phone away Mr. Joseph Von Butthead decided that he was going to be stupid. Calling for his herd mates, jigging, shaking his head and totally not paying attention to me. I spent a lot of extra time and energy working this boy. My “workout” with Lil’ Joe I am sure was equal to 2 hours spent in the gym.
I made it home safe. It took us twice as long and Joe was a sweaty hot mess. A few more rides like that and we will be back to our own relaxing rides. CAN’T WAIT!!
Nice. Horses can have so many personalities. I know just how you feel. Some days Charly is Sir Charles other days he is a Charly horse and on the really bad ones I’m thinking ground Chuck
