mis·fit

noun \ˈmis-ˌfit also ˌmis-ˈfit\

: a person who is different from other people and who does not seem to belong in a particular group or situation

That is the Webster definition of misfit.  I italicized and emboldened the does not seem part for a reason.  That phrase is by definition what God, through Paul, revealed to be the mystery of The Body of Christ or The Church.  What God often does, does not seem to belong together.  The Church does not seem to belong in this world.  The Church does not seem to make sense to the world.  The Church does not seem to be at peace with this world.  With that being said, if your church belongs to this world, does it belong to God?  If your church makes sense to the world, is it what God intended?  If your church is at peace with the world, will you be at peace with God?  We are told by the apostle John;

1 John 2:15-16

15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.

We support, promote and condone the church we attend with our time and our money.  Should we not look around and make sure it is The Church that God intended?  Do you go to your church for what it gives to you and that is makes you feel good?  That in itself is not a bad thing, but is it what God intended?  Does your church encourage you to serve and to give back to others?  Well, that is not convenient?   Do you believe you are without sin and therefore not in need of conviction?  Well, that is not a feel good sort of thing?  Do you believe your city, county and country is what God would be proud of?  If not, are your leaders challenging you, prodding you and leading you to do something about it?  That is not convenient or a feel good sort of thing?  When you go to church, do most of the people look like you, dress like you and act like you?  If so, who is going to tell you when you are wrong?  If you are all doing the wrong thing, then you will continue to do the wrong thing, or nothing, since you all believe you are right.  Your eyes tell you to act like each other, so you do, because you all must be right.

But what if in your little pink houses church, you befriend a young boy that has no Father?  What if you learn the pain of going through life without the support and guidance a Father is suppose to give?  What if you try to do something about it?  What if you help a young couple that is struggling, because you learned from that young boy what pain there is being raised without a Father?  That is what God intended The Church to be.

What if in your suit and tie church, you befriend a man without a job?  What if you learn about the indignity of having your worldly identity stripped away from you?  What if you try to do something about it?  What if you heard from a friend about a job opening, and you convinced him to give your new friend that job?  What if that man regains his dignity and turns his life around?  That is what God intended The Church to be.

What if in your white bread church, you befriend a man of color?  What if you learn about true hatred directed at you for nothing you have done, simply because of your race?  What if you try to do something about it?  What if you hear from your buddies, how all the jobs are going to the Mexicans?  What if you remind them that Christ died for that man also and his family?  What if that man of color learns, from you, that Christ does not see what color he is?  That is what God intended The Church to be.

You see, The Body of Christ is suppose to be diverse. Not what the world calls diversity.  Their idea of diversity is for you to put away your convictions and adopt a world view of no convictions.  They do not want your Christianity, they do not want your Church and they certainly do not want your Christ.  In fact, they expect, demand and will try to force you to give that all up.  If you think this is far fetched, look into how California State University system, just recently, has de-recognized all Christian based groups from their college campus’.  They are now no longer able to have access to the student body or student facilities.

We are suppose to be a bunch of misfits.  We are suppose to be male, female, young, old, rich, poor, fat, skinny, smokers, non-smokers, bikers, bicyclists, babes in Christ, mature in Christ grafted into one Body of Christ.  If you are sitting in your little pink houses and go to your white bread church, wearing your suit and tie how will you ever meet those that do not live like you, do not have clothes like you and do not have advantages like you?  The answer is you won’t.

If you have stuck this far with me in this article, then you are the answer.  Well, Christ through you is the answer.  Look for other misfits and invite them to your church.  If your church does not welcome the misfit with open arms, and every other Dirty Rotten Sinner (DRSW), then find a new church.  Why do I say that?  Because if your church members do not know they are also Dirty Rotten Sinners themselves, then they can not be used by God.  In fact, they may not even be part of The Body of Christ.

You can make a difference.  You can shine a mirror to your church.  You can be used by God to graft in all of the pieces that The Body of Christ is suppose to have.  You can, through Christ, led by The Spirit and empowered by The Father.  What the world does not seem to get, is that we are The Body of Christ and we do have His purposes to fulfill.   Be well.

Ephesians 2:10

10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
