Be Patient With Yourself

I am going to preface this series of articles with the following disclaimer. I am NOT a fitness trainer, I am NOT a nutritionist and I am NOT a doctor. I am just like you. I am writing this based upon my personal experiences and observations. I am writing these to help you and remind myself. So, here it goes.

Remember, you did not gain your weight overnight. You did not lose your muscle tone over one weekend. This all took time, stress, lack of sleep, lack of activity and most importantly an awful diet. Since it took time to get this way, give it some time to undo it. We are talking months people!

  1. Do not go out day one and exercise like you are 18 again. Being in pain for four days is not really going to help you lose weight. Go for a walk or a bike ride. Take the stairs instead of an elevator. Do multiple small things throughout the day.
  2. Gradually increase the level of activity over weeks. Once you have gotten to the point you can walk a couple of miles regularly, then start to jog 15 steps and then walk 15 steps. Gradually increase until you can jog longer.
  3. Steady slow weight loss might not be as dramatic, but you are playing a long game and not just trying to lose weight for a reunion, wedding or summer beach wear. Unless you love to punish yourself, lose the weight and keep it off by thinking in terms of the long term.

Patience will allow you to deal with inevitable weight loss plateaus, falling off the wagon one weekend and all the other trip ups that come with a major lifestyle change you are undertaking. If we can help, then call Buffy or me and benefit from our experience with making bad choices and our success with making good choices.
